So, got any tips on how to make the most of this experience? I am a little overwhelmed... where should I start? How do you network when there are so many faces? I would like this to be an educational experience something tangible I can walk away with. ( and NO I don't mean "stuff", I mean knowledge, hands on, user friendly, working knowledge!) Any tips

Be prepared! Plan your attack. Look at the schedule and highlight what really interests you, and don't look back. There's way too much to absorb in a weekend. SCHEDULE time (at least a couple hours) to peruse the exhibit hall, and take in at least one poster session and one podium presentation to get a great "big picture" perspective. If you're a member of a SIG, go to the meeting...it's an awesome way to network with nurses that share the same interests. And never underestimate the gal or guy standing next to you in the coffee line... they, too, might have something interesting to say. If you come away with nothing else, at least you'll leave with a better appreciation for oncology nursing as a profession. Most importantly, have fun!

So I finallly found a way to open up to the person standing next me (it's weird, we are so isolated, with our computers and our cell phones) and I am richer for it. It was fun to have conversation, find out where people come from , what they do and how they practice their healing arts! Fun to run into these people t/o the day and t/o congress.... a friendly greeting and familiar face (however brief) was nice, had a great time... Keep strong, keep moving and keep up the faith! Kudos to the early runners, walkers, and wheelers who participated in the ONS Foundation/Pfizer Fun Run/Walk & Wheelchair. Then we were on to the 28th Mara Mogensen Flaherty Memorial Lectureship presented by Mary Hughes from MD Anderson - "Sexuality and Cancer: The Final Frontier for Nurses." Mary's talk framed this topic well and gave attendees many tips on how to support their patients.

An early start to the day was the ONCC breakfast at which honors were given to Heather Mackey - AOCN of the year, Faith Chennette - OCN of the year, Elaine Sein - Pearl Moore Certification Champion, and Roswell Park Cancer Institute - Employer Recognition. Patty, check out this website: http://tinyurl.com/cujvo7 It is the trip planner for the bus. The website says that it'll cost you $1.10 for the ride which will take a few minutes. I tried it. There were several routes. When you put the address in, for the street names use "S" for south and "E" for east. Happy, safe travels.

There will be a Focus Group session for nurse survivors who are attending Congress on Thursday, April 30, 2009 from 11:30 a.m. – 1 p.m. in Room 215 of the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center. I am interested in a Nurse Survivor Focus Group but will be at the Survivorship SIG meeting at 11:30 on April 30. I would like to know how many people would be interested in a survivor blog. I have one on google http://cancersurvivorx3.blogspot.com. It has been therapeutic to write about my experiences. Many survivors are doing this.
I would also be interested in a virtual community where we could share information and have a support network. Oncology nurses who live through the disease they have been treating have unique challenges. We have seen the worst side of cancer and now have to live with the fear that we will experience the worst.
I think it is unfortunate that this meeting is scheduled at the same time as the Survivorship, Quality of Life & Rehabilitation SIG. You will not get an accurate feedback on question number 2 because the group will have self-selected not to join the SIG by attending this meeting.

Is anyone else staying at the Marriott Plaza? It is not a convention hotel but about 3 blocks away in the opposite direction of the designated hotels.
My question is, is there any transportation from that hotel to the convention? I am sure the shuttles won't go there and I have a bad hip so walking will be difficult. I did not book the original trip.

ONS is carefully monitoring the Center for Disease Controls (CDC) updates to the Public Health Emergency related to the swine flu. We will continue to monitor CDC recommendations and connect with public health officials in San Antonio to recieve the latest news.
